What is Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa – subclass 494?
The recently introduced 494 visa by the Australian Government offers approved candidates the opportunity to reside, work, and pursue studies in specified regional zones of Australia. This visa is strategically crafted to assist regional employers in mitigating the recognized shortage of labor within their respective areas. It enables them to sponsor skilled workers when suitable Australian candidates are not available. In terms of migration, nearly all areas across Australia except major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are categorized as designated regional regions. It’s important to note that places like Perth and the Gold Coast also fall within the regional area classification.
Visa 494 Benefits
With visa 494, you can:
- live, work and study only in designated regional areas of Australia for 5 years.
- travel to and from Australia for 5 years.
- if eligible, apply for permanent residence after 3 years from the time your visa is granted
- include members of the family unit in your application.

General Requirements
Like all visa applications, meeting specific requirements is essential. For the 494 visa, these prerequisites encompass:
- Receipt of a nomination for an occupation listed on the pertinent skilled occupation list.
- Accumulation of a minimum of 3 years of pertinent work experience within the nominated occupation.
- Holding a pertinent skills assessment, unless exempted.
- Restriction to employment solely with your sponsor or related entity, unless an exemption is granted.
- Being below 45 years of age, unless an exemption is granted.
- Fulfilling the prescribed minimum standards of English language proficiency.

- If eligible, you can apply for permanent residence after you have held your 494 visa for 3 years.
- Unless you have held your subclass 494 visa for 3 years, holders of the subclass 494 visa are unable to:
- Make a valid application for a subclass 820 (Partner) visa
- Be granted any of the following visas:
- Subclass 132 (Business Talent)
- Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme)
- Subclass 188 (Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional))
- Subclass 189 (Skilled (Independent))
- Subclass 190 (Skilled (Nominated))
- Subclass 191 (Skilled Regional) (Regional Provisional Stream)
- Subclass 858 (Global Talent)

This visa is for members of the family unit of a Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (SESR) (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) holder who are applying separately for their SESR visa and wish to join the primary SESR visa holder in Australia.
